On Lake Michigan, trolling is the name of the game. We'll be setting up a spread of lines behind the boat, each rigged with lures or bait that'll make those salmon and trout go nuts. Downriggers, planer boards, and dipsy divers are our secret weapons for getting our offerings right in the strike zone. As we cruise along, keep your eyes peeled for diving birds or surface activity - that's often a dead giveaway that fish are feeding. When a rod goes off, it's all hands on deck! You'll take turns reeling in the big ones, and trust me, when a 20-pound king salmon hits, you'll know why they call it a fight!

Chinook Salmon: Also known as king salmon, these bruisers are the heavyweight champs of Lake Michigan. Chinooks can tip the scales at over 30 pounds, and they fight like their lives depend on it. Spring and fall are prime time for kings, but summer can produce some monster catches too. When a king hits your line, hold on tight - these fish are known for blistering runs that'll have your drag screaming.
Coho Salmon: The acrobats of the salmon world, coho are known for their spectacular leaps and fast runs. They might be smaller than their chinook cousins, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers and fight. Cohos typically range from 5 to 10 pounds and are most active in the spring and early summer. Their orange-red flesh is prized by anglers for its delicious flavor.
Steelhead Trout: These are the marathoners of the Great Lakes. Steelhead are actually rainbow trout that have adapted to life in the big water, and they're known for their endurance and acrobatic fights. They can be caught year-round, but spring and fall see the biggest concentrations as they move closer to shore. A steelhead on light tackle is the ultimate test of an angler's skill - be ready for multiple runs and jumps before you can even think about netting one of these beauties.

Chinook salmon, also called kings, are the largest salmon in Lake Michigan. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds but can top 40. Look for them in cooler, deeper water, especially near structure. Kings put up an epic fight - be ready for screaming runs and acrobatic jumps. Their rich, red flesh makes amazing table fare too. Peak season is July through September when they stage for their spawning run. To land a big one, troll deep with downriggers using large spoons or plugs that mimic baitfish. Keep your drag set light and be patient - these fish will test your gear and your arms. Nothing beats the thrill of hooking into a Lake Michigan king salmon.
Coho salmon are the acrobats of Lake Michigan. Smaller than kings at 5-10 pounds, what they lack in size they make up for in fight. These silver missiles love to jump and run, giving light tackle anglers a real thrill. Find them in the top 30 feet of water, often cruising in schools. Spring and fall are prime time as cohos move closer to shore. Their orange-pink meat is delicious smoked or grilled. To catch cohos, troll with smaller spoons and crankbaits at varying depths. Keep your gear light for more sport. A local trick: on calm days, try casting small spinners near the surface - cohos can't resist chasing a fleeing lure. Their fast runs and aerial displays make cohos a favorite target for many Lake Michigan anglers.
Steelhead are the Great Lakes' version of rainbow trout, spending most of their lives in the big water before running up rivers to spawn. These chrome rockets average 5-12 pounds and are prized for their hard-fighting spirit. Find them along shorelines and river mouths in spring and fall, or out deep in summer. Steelhead offer year-round action and some of the best pound-for-pound fights in freshwater. Their mild, pink flesh is excellent eating too. To hook up, try suspending spawn sacs or small spoons under floats near shore. When trolling deeper water, use smaller lures than for salmon. A stealthy approach is key - these fish can be line-shy. Once hooked, hang on tight and enjoy the ride as steelhead leap and run with abandon.
