Chinook Salmon: Known as "King Salmon" for good reason, these bruisers can tip the scales at over 30 pounds. They're the heavyweights of Lake Michigan, known for their powerful runs and dogged fights. Chinooks are typically most active in the cooler months, with fall being prime time as they prepare for their spawning run. When you hook into one of these bad boys, hold on tight - it's going to be a battle you won't forget!
Coho Salmon: While not as big as their Chinook cousins, Cohos make up for it with their acrobatics. These silver missiles are known for their spectacular leaps and zigzag runs that'll have your drag singing. They average around 5-10 pounds but fight like they're twice that size. Cohos tend to school up, so when you find one, chances are good there are more nearby. Spring and early summer are typically hot times for Coho action.
Steelhead Trout: If you're after a fish that'll make you work for every inch of line, steelhead are your target. These rainbow trout on steroids are famous for their stamina and aerial displays. A hooked steelhead will often tailwalk across the surface, testing both your gear and your nerves. They can be caught year-round in Lake Michigan, but many anglers swear by the spring and fall for the best action. Steelhead in the 5-15 pound range are common, with some real monsters lurking in the depths.
Look, there's a reason why Lake Michigan is considered one of the premier freshwater fishing destinations in the world. With Reel 4 Real Charters, you're not just going fishing - you're getting a front-row seat to some of the best angling action the Great Lakes have to offer. Our half-day trips are perfect for fitting a world-class fishing experience into your busy schedule. Chinook, or King Salmon, are the heavyweights of Lake Michigan. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds but can top 40. They're down deep most of the year, so we use downriggers to get our lures where they're feeding. Spring and fall are prime times, as they move closer to shore. Chinooks put up a heck of a fight - be ready for screaming reels and acrobatic jumps. Their rich, orange flesh makes excellent table fare too. To boost your odds, try bright-colored lures on sunny days and darker patterns when it's overcast. These kings like their meals flashy, so don't be afraid to go big with your offerings. Just hang on tight when one hits - it might be the fish of a lifetime.

Coho, or silver salmon, are the acrobats of Lake Michigan. Averaging 5-10 pounds, these high-flyers are known for their spectacular leaps when hooked. We usually find them in the top 30 feet of water, especially near temperature breaks and bait schools. Spring and early summer are hot times for coho action. They're aggressive feeders, so trolling with flashy spoons or cut bait works well. Cohos are a blast on light tackle and make for some of the best-eating salmon around. Their orange-red flesh is milder than chinook, perfect for the grill or smoker. Here's a local trick: when you see gulls working the surface, there's a good chance coho are pushing bait up. Head to those birds, and you might just find a frenzy.

Steelhead are the marathoners of Lake Michigan - ocean-going rainbow trout that can reach 10-15 pounds. These silver bullets are known for blistering runs and aerial displays when hooked. We find them throughout the water column, often near temperature breaks or around structure. Spring and fall are peak seasons as they move closer to shore. Steelhead fight harder than any other trout, making them a favorite target for sport anglers. Their pink flesh is delicious smoked or grilled. To up your chances, try fishing "ladderback" style - running lures at different depths until you find the magic zone. And don't horse them in; steelhead have soft mouths, so a smooth, steady retrieve is key to landing these powerful fish.
